John Neuser works in an ER at a level 1 trauma center and he’s also a certified wilderness first responder. Quite frequently he sees people come into his ER with gunshot wounds. So I asked him to interview with me and discuss the effect that different bullets, calibers and bullet weights can have in a self defense situation. We also briefly discussed our favorite types of ammo and over penetration. You’ll enjoy this practical and useful interview. This episode also begins with a voice mail from a listener regarding fighting back against gun control and a couple of emails from listeners. One listener shared an excellent personal defense story!

Once in awhile, I feel it’s important to remember how important it is to get back to basics. This episode is a review of the basics of concealed carry, competition and handgun shooting. I will discuss trigger control, caliber, stopping power, mindset and an analysis of your concealed carry system. I also received some voice mails from listeners, that I discuss in the beginning of this episode. Thanks for downloading and listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Podcast.

Even though this is the HandgunWorld Podcast, every once in awhile the subject is about rifles or shotguns. So recently Ben Branam and I got together to discuss practicing with your self defense rifle. We also talked about ammunition selection and ballistics. Ben ran his AK in a recent carbine match and I ran my AR and we discussed our experience, respectively. If you’re also a rifle enthusiast, you will enjoy this podcast. Have you ever thought about how you would keep yourself alive, after you get shot? Most people survive when being shot with a handgun. But can you administer first aid to yourself? This episode concentrates on trauma medicine. I interview Dr. John Meade. He’s an ER physician and director of Trauma Medicine for Suarez International. He teaches a course called Trauma Medicine for the concealed carry operator. He’s also written a book called “Beating the Reaper, Vol. 1.” Consider this, because of your excellent training, you’ve prevailed in the gunfight, but your spouse who was with you has been wounded. Do you know what to do? Are you prepared? Dr. Meade gives some valuable insights in this interview. Links can be found on the GRRN forum. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Podcast

This episode was pre recorded almost 2 weeks ago. But since I’m taking a brief vacation from this show, I decided to make this episode 148, even though I made a mistake in the intro and called it episode 147. Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss how to get ready for a MAG 40 class. Naturally we also discuss a few other topics as well such as IDPA. Next week will be another guest podcast (episode 149) done by a special guest, then I will be back in real time for Episode 150 and a lot of cool stuff planned for the future! Links for this episode will be on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for downloading and listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

A little over a week ago I took Suarez International’s Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas. Many listeners were there to train with me. It was intense and taught us about the defensive mindset and how to safely and efficiently use our gun to stop the situation if it ever got to that point. So I decided to record a little bit of what happened at the course. I interviewed other students and also had a chance to record our instructor discuss the significant points of the class. Short of actually being there, this recording should help you share the experience. Please try to get to one of these classes. I think it’s a wise investment if you carry a gun and plan to use it as a defensive tool. We cover after action assessments, SUL, shooting with both hands and a lot more. Thanks for listening. I will post links related to this show on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum. Thanks for listening. Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

So much good feedback and questions have been sent to me in the past few weeks. I really appreciate it, so in this episode I get caught up on quite a bit of my backlog of emails. This show includes information about High Noon Holsters, the Kel Tec PLR-16, Texas Gun Talk forums, stopping power, Center Axis Relock, testing handguns and more. Most of this show is contributed by people on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and emails sent to me recently. I consider this a show produced by the listeners. I’m just the host and the guy that puts it together. Thanks for listening and safe shooting! Bob Mayne – HandgunWorld Show

Can you fight with your handgun? What I mean by that, is can you fight your way out of trouble if you’re attacked? I’m not advocating looking for a gunfight, please don’t assume that. What I am advocating is the training needed to fight your way out of trouble and stay alive. That’s really why we carry a gun, isn’t it? So this episode is interview number 2 with Jon Payne, staff instructor at Suarez International. We discuss the upcoming Close Range Gunfighting course in Dallas on May 28th and 29th. in this interview, you’ll gain valuable insight to the “self defense” mindset and tactics even if you don’t attend this course. We will definine in more detail, getting off the X, dynamic movement, defending SUL, defensive tactics and a lot more. More discussion on rental guns. After going to the range with James Kimmerle, I did an interview with him. We discussed our thoughts about a Glock .357Sig, FN 9mm and Beretta PX4 sub compact 9mm. At the beginning of the show I cover some information on a recent back up gun match I shot with my P380. We also discussed James’ new High Noon Public Secret left handed holster for his PX4. We also spent some time discussing the Tucson shooting and why the anti gunners and media have it all wrong. I also make an announcement about a new fund raising effort for the 2nd Amendment foundation. On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. It’s packed with good shooting skills information, interviews and audio clips, exclusive only to those who help support my show.

There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”
Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!
Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.
