Why do I carry a gun? In this episode I’ll cover more than just the fact that I can’t carry a cop. It’s certainly a lot deeper than that and I’ll give you some things to think about. You may also want to pass this along to other people who wonder why those of us who believe in concealed carry actually carry guns.
Highlights:
- Are people who carry guns, paranoid?
- Who are the most likely people to commit crimes?
- How the Boy Scout Motto relates to carrying a gun.
- The gun is a tool, your mind is your weapon.
- Why women should carry guns?
Bob, You did a good job of stating the reasons you carry a gun. Some newbies may wrestle with this. I like the way Syd put it. Syd used to do a podcast and still maintains some web sites. You can see his stuff at http://www.snubnosefiles.com. You may have seen this poem other places but I credit him.

I don’t carry a gun…
November 13th, 2007 by Syd
… to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed.
I don’t carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m paranoid. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.
I don’t carry a gun because I hate the government. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m angry. I carry a gun so that I don’t have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.
I don’t carry a gun because my sex organs are too small. I carry a gun because I want to continue to use those sex organs for the purpose for which they were intended for a good long time to come.
I don’t carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.
I don’t carry a gun because I’m a cowboy. I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.
I don’t carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.
I don’t carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate.
I don’t carry a gun because I love it. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.
This is great! I actually have never seen that before. Good stuff and thanks for sharing it!
I have just started listening to you podcasts and have learned so much. I have hadn’t cancel carry permit for 4 months. My primary reason for obtaining the permit was just to exercise my rights. All that changed yesterday when my wife and I were followed into a rest stop. The person who follwed us was alone, no dog, no kids and no other adults in the car. He parked right next to us and just watchd as I got the dog out to do her necessary duties. When he got out of his car he just stood there with it running and wactched me wit the dog. I whispered to my wife to get my gun from under the seat. She did not quite grasp the seriousness of te situation so I walked around to my side of the car. At this time he asked me where I was going and wanted a ride. I told him no, opened my door and reached under my seat. While I was doing that he got in his car and dove off. The gun is now on my belt.
Glad to hear it. Carry often and carry everywhere. A similar experience happened to me in 2005 that made me start carrying a gun.
