Selecting a rifle for defense is just as hard as selecting a handgun. It’s highly unlikely that citizens in the U.S. will have to use their rifle to fend off zombies, but for the rare situation that would require the use of a rifle, I discuss what to look for, what common choices there are, what ammo types are out there and why you may want to choose them.
Highlights:
- Calibers: .223, 7.62, .308
- Action types.
- Accuracy needs.
- What accessories do you need?
- What rifles I own and why?
- How often will you need your rifle?
- Survival rifles.
- Why stick with military calibers?
- The truth about assault weapons

Because I have a Glock 19 9mm, do you recommend a 9mm carbine -even if only to have your carbine and pistol share the same ammo?
Are pistol-caliber rifles lacking enough ‘punch’ for survival purposes? I’m most interested in your opinion.
Yes, pistol caliber carbines in the same caliber as your handgun are a good idea. For defensive purposes, yes, for survival, no. I think you need something with more power than a 9mm carbine for hunting. For a survival rifle, get one of the rifles I mentioned in this show. However, lots of people get a carbine for defensive purposes in the same caliber as their handgun. I have 2 Glock 19’s and I wish I had a Kel Tec Sub 2000. Maybe in the near future.
You do realize that this Leroy Pile is WRONG about the legality of the fully automatic rifle, right??? Also, I think you should be more clear about whether you owna n AK-47 or an SKS.
No I did not realize that. Please clarify. I own an AK-47 (actually AKM style) made by SAIGA (Russia) then converted to standard AK configuration. Chambered in 7.62 X 39.
