This week is about the differences between military and civilian firearms training. Ben Branam joins me to discuss this topic. His military firearms training experiences clearly point out the advantages and disadvantages of both methods. There are some very good points and bad points about each. We discuss team tactics, defensive tactics and more. We also discuss how they can be applied in every day life.

David Scaife, owner of Sturdy Belt manufacturing is my guest on this episode. I’ve often talked about your concealed carry “system.” And your belt is part of that system. Some of the finest belts are made by Sturdy Belt and I own one. This episode also begins with voice mails from listeners regarding the 2nd amendment, drawing your weapon, buying your spouse a gun, Ben Branam’s response to a caller last week regarding responsible gun use and a call from Australia! What to look for when buying your first handgun. This episode is about what not to look for actually. It’s just my opinion of course, but it’s based on a great deal of experience of my own and others. Also, I cover voice mails about aftermath of a self defense shooting, post election gun and ammo purchases, a Beretta Cheetah and more. This episode also features an audio clip by Massad Ayoob and Tom Gresham recorded for Guns And ammo called Action Plan.

CR Williams is my guest on this episode. He’s recently written a book about gunfighting. We discussed some excellent topics such as the emotional orientation to a gunfight, actual techniques such as the draw stroke, use of the long gun in self defense, why having a John Wayne attitude isn’t all bad, what they’re not telling you about point shooting, fighting inside of your house, long range shooting with a handgun, dry fire practice and whether or not you can buy accuracy! In other words, is accuracy king?

The Gun Control subject is a touchy one. So many opinions. But one fact is clear, the 2nd amendment is an individual right and that has now been upheld by the SCOTUS. But in this episode I have a little fun with the gun control discussion. So there’s a little humor in this show and also some serious discussion. I found some good audio soundbites of some well known people and some anonymous people on the subject of Gun Control. Some news interviews too. I think you’ll enjoy them. You never know when and where someone who want’s to harm you, will strike. Often times we are in a compromised position or perhaps your attacker is even so close, that they are at arm’s length or even closer! Violent encounters don’t happen like a competition match. There’s no timer, no scoring system and no re-shoot. Not to make fun of competition at all, because as you know, I totally enjoy it and support the shooting sports. But the main topic of this show is what to think about when shooting at arm’s length distance. So I reviewed and excellent article by Jon Payne of Suarez International on this subject. Some of this is from my personal experience during the training I recently took under him. Also, Jon Hodoway has more to say on how to pick a firearms trainer and ammunition ballistics. You’ll also learn about the Wall Drill. A dry fire practice technique taught by an Army Reserve shooting instructor. I also cover some listener emails on subjects like the Glock 26 as a back up gun and appendix carry. Finally, you’ll hear my review of the Smith and Wesson model 39-2. I recently had a chance to shoot one for the first time. Links for all of these can be found on the Gun Rights Radio Network forum. Thanks for listening, Bob Mayne, HandgunWorld Show.

Jon Hodoway joins me on this episode to discuss mindset of concealed carry. He also shares a recent experience he had where mindset paid off. He was carrying but it had a good ending. We also got into good discussion on how to select a firearms trainer. Jon is a firearms trainer for the Pro Arms team and usually has some very valuable insights. This show is no exception. He’s a traveller like me and travels with his handguns. He shares a story about what happened to him on the road. Also, Un-named Trucker submitted a review of the Galco King Tuk holster. Gabe Suarez, founder and lead instructor of Suarez International joins me on this episode. His instructor for Close Range Gunfighting coming up in Dallas and instructor Jon Payne also joins me. We discussed how and why Gabe started his training school, the importance of magazine capacity, why 9mm, what CRG is all about, training mindset, dry fire practice, handgun fit, what “winning a gun fight means” and more. Gabe also shares a story about a man involved in a self defense shooting without enough ammo. Thanks to listeners who emailed in some neat questions, Gabe and Jon gave us a lot to think about in this episode. Thanks for downloading and listening and don’t forget to join the forum at the GRRN. So much good feedback and questions have been sent to me in the past few weeks. I really appreciate it, so in this episode I get caught up on quite a bit of my backlog of emails. This show includes information about High Noon Holsters, the Kel Tec PLR-16, Texas Gun Talk forums, stopping power, Center Axis Relock, testing handguns and more. Most of this show is contributed by people on the Gun Rights Radio Network Forum and emails sent to me recently. I consider this a show produced by the listeners. I’m just the host and the guy that puts it together. Thanks for listening and safe shooting! Bob Mayne – HandgunWorld Show

On December 14, 2010 a tragic shooting took place during a Florida School Board meeting. Jon Hodoway and I discuss the events that took place and what it means to all of us who conceal or open carry on a daily basis. Jon did his homework on this event, reading transcripts and analyzing videos. I think you’ll find his conclusions and opinions quite compelling. Here are a few questions I would like to pose to you as you listen to this. First, this happened in a gun free zone, so have you ever wondered how dangerous gun free zones really are? Secondly, why do people not believe that something like this can never happen to them? Third, are you prepared? Please take this information to heart and really think about what’ being said in this show and thanks for downloading and enjoy the interview. By the way, if you want to support my show consider investing in the digital download or CD I’ve just released. It’s packed with good shooting skills information, interviews and audio clips, exclusive only to those who help support my show.

There seems to be a never ending argument about whether competition shooting helps you with your ability to defend yourself with a handgun. So finally, Episode 100 is here! First of all, thanks to all of you who have made this possible. I start with some listener feedback then the main topic. I promised this would be just another episode and that it is. As long as you keep listening I will keep putting out shows on my favorite passion…shooting. This episode is inspired by an excellent article from Defense Review entitled “Why Competitive Shooters and Mixed Martial Arts practitioners have a combat advantage.”
Here’s an excerpt below and enjoy the show!
Real violence is not sporting, it is confusing, often grotesque, and characterized by intense physical effects upon combatants. In a real fight, the winner is often the individual or individuals who employ simple, effective maneuvers in a precise and deadly manner. But the application of these techniques in a fight can be quite difficult. Countless repetitions have to be performed for a gross motor skill, such as a punch, to be performed upon a resistant opponent. For a complex motor skill, such as marksmanship, thousands of repetitions are performed before an individual can utilize that technique against any sort of resistance. Therein lies the beauty of competition. Competitive training does not dwell on tactics or mindset, but instead on the constant repetition of key skills. It is in this context that I believe that sporting events can function as a decisive training tool for martial-minded individuals.

Jon Hodoway is my guest on this show. He agreed to be interviewed due to some challenges I had with some of his comments and quotes of me a few weeks ago. We had a very good civil discussion on concealed carry, caliber, choice of gun, training, stopping power and why he doesn’t like the .380acp! So download and listen as soon as you can. I found this to be very informative and while we don’t see eye to eye on everything, that’s a good thing. Jon does a good job of backing up his arguments and he makes some very convincing points. I like the fact that he used evidence that he’s found and not just pie in the sky theories. We also discussed some expensive 1911’s and a couple of revolvers.
Thanks for listening,
Bob Mayne

Your draw from the holster is one of the most important skills to know to deploy your handgun for self defense. So is performing a reload. In this episode I get taught a new way of performing a reload. We also break down the 5 step reload into on of the best explanations I’ve ever heard in the audio version. I cover a little listener feedback in segment one. But have you ever stopped to concentrate on your draw stroke? Do yo practice it? Thousands of repetitions? When you reload do you look your magazine into the magwell or keep focused on the threat? What do you do with your gun to regain sight picture after a reload. The porpoise technique? Does your draw look like a bowling ball motion? Tune in, I think you’ll find this show educational no matter what your skill level. This show pertains to you while shooting competition OR self defense.

Anatomy of Ending a Fight is important to know in case of the unfortunate event that occurs when you have to use your handgun. Please keep in mind, I do not in any way advocate killing or using lethal force unless it’s absolutely necessary. Please educate yourself on when to use deadly force. Courses by Massad Ayoob and Tom Givens are excellent resources on this topic. But if you do have to use your gun I hope you find some good basics as to how you can more likely stop your attackers. I’ll discuss things like CNS hits, RS hits, CS hits and effective stopping power techniques. Please read an excellent post on this too sent to me by a listener. Good stuff complete with a video! You’ll also hear why I really don’t think caliber is a big deal. Big and slow vs. small and fast, it really doesn’t matter, in my opinion. What matters more is how effectively you can react and place your shots and where you place them.

P.S. I usually don’t put out 2 shows in one week, but since Eric’s interview was a pleasant surprise and up and ready to go I wanted to get it out there. This episode was to be the regularly scheduled episode.
